About this site
Our children—Lucy, Brian, and Peter, ages 3, 5, and 8. They are seated on a log with Crab Lake in the background.

On Philosopher Grandma, I write about grandparenting's joys, struggles, and puzzles—aiming for ideas that can help readers care well for their grandchildren. I also share grandkid-approved ideas for fun, complete with instructions and resources.

A bit about me: I'm Susan Hawthorne. The "Philosopher" part of my background comes from my PhD in philosophy from the University of Minnesota, and from my years of teaching at Mount Holyoke College and St. Catherine University. That and a four-year-old's tenacity for asking "Why?" My "Grandma" experience was supplied by our three grown children, who now collectively have three children of their own. "Grandpa" and I have the great good fortune to live in the same metro area with all of them, and to have health and time to devote to caregiving.
